Just putting this here in the hope that google will find it and save a few other people grief while they work this out for themselves:

Allowing Mozilla Firefox to automagically upgrade your version of the user agent switcher extension to 0.6.5 will slightly bork your browser. The main menu bar (file, edit, etc.) will be unresponsive (as will most of the UI) The main content area of the window will be blank, your bookmarks toolbar will be blank, and no doubt sundry other problems I didn't notice at the time.

How to fix it:

  1. Launch Firefox in safe mode (start->programs->mozilla firefox->mozilla firefox (safe mode)
  2. (express relief as all your bookmarks reappear and the menu bar works)
  3. Tools->Extensions
  4. Select "User Agent Switcher" and click the "uninstall" button
  5. close firefox
  6. re-open firefox normally, and all should be well

Reinstalling the extension at this point seems to work fine, too. It's just the automatic update that messes things up.
