The gameplay has changed a little, with a slight increase in speed compared to the original, moving it towards the slot occupied by Quake III. The weapons seem pretty similar, with some minor tweaks, and still suffer from my old gripe going right back to Unreal - they just don't "feel" very effective. I susupect that this is mostly because it can be quite tricky to tell when you have hit a target, and you can land 3 or 4 seemingly solid hits without your target going down.
Graphically, I have mixed feelings. I suffered a few glitches on my system, but I'll accept them as teething problems in what is effectively a beta of the final engine. The levels are visually stunning, incredibly detailed, though the colours seemed somewhat monotonous. Which led to my main problem - I often found it very difficult to visuallly acquire enemies at longer ranges. The model included in the demo just kept blending in to the background.
It's a long time since I've really enjoyed playing fast-and-furious deathmatch games on the internet and, based on the demo, I think the final version of UT2003 will suffer from my usual objections. So I'll want to play against the bots. This is one area where the demo isn't much use to me, as it only allows online play against people. I will be intrigued to see how good epic's bots are to play against.
This is mostly a matter of how "human" the bots seem. Here, things bode well, as the bots in the original UT were among the most human I've seen yet, if somewhat lacking in "personality".
So, I'll wait and see, but I doubt it's going to displace Team Fortress Classic in my affections.
[edit: yes, it does have bots. I must have a blind spot. See October 1st for my thoughts...]
