A couple of weeks ago, the Straight Dope Message Board went off on a riff of LOTR pastiches. Teresa Nielsen Hayden has helpfully edited some highlights for those who, like me, are too lazy to trawl the original thread.

And the Straight Dope thread post-dates the thread on soc.history.what-if (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=xAl5NCAhMB82EwXz%40flin.demon.co.uk&rnum=1&prev=/groups%3Fhl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26selm%3DxAl5NCAhMB82EwXz%2540flin.demon.co.uk) started by Alison Brooks, which post-dates the examples in a fanzine called "Exosphere" I picked up at my first con (and I bet it was old even then). But what the hell, it's damn' good, and the thread on Making Light has a whole bunch of dead clever people being very clever indeed.

Hey, I'd be downright traumatised if nobody had done it before :)

I did go to the Straight Dope thread, but had an apathy attack when it came to reading the zillions of (very variable quality) entries. TNH has done a good job of picking fun ones.
