Voyager Lonestar Isol, a Forged interstellar probe, is mortally wounded by a collision with debris in deep space. Dying, she discovers a lump of Stuff, which appears to be a Faster-Than-Light drive. Returned to the solar system, her discovery brings to a head the tensions between unevolved humans and the Forged. But is the Stuff really what it appears to be?
I'm slightly frustrated by Natural History, as it appears to be a standalone novel, and in many ways I found the society which forms the background of the story to be even more interesting than the main plot. Not that there's much wrong with that plot (in fact, there's a lot right with it) it's just that I want to learn more about the Forged, before, during and after the timeframe covered in this tale.
A cracking good read, which kept me turning pages at a fair old rate.
