Another book I picked up at conteXXt, despite its unreadable spine (black text on purple and silver stripes? What were they on?)
In a society of human colonists on an alien world in the far future, The Artificial Kid, an apparently young combat artist, tries to survive as his world falls apart around him.
It's a rite-of-passage tale, in many ways, as the Kid grows up fast. Sterling's (I think) second novel, first published in 1980, TAK combines elements of the Planetary Romance theme of his first novel (Involution Ocean) with many of the sensibilities of the then-unborn genre that came to be known as cyberpunk. I enjoyed it.
