Now, throw in (US Deputy Secretary of defence) Paul Wolfowitz's comments that one of the major reasons for attacking Iraq was that it would allow the US to make life easier for the Saudi government by removing US troops from their country, and...

The US is "promoting democracy" in the middle east by propping up a feudal monarchy, and threatening (maybe even getting ready to invade) one of the few countries in the region with a popularly-elected reformist government. Lovely.
